Beautiful, elegant design. Very fun to watch. It’s a shame only the “seconds” bar is in constant motion. It would be great to see the “15 minutes” bar stretch halfway to the “16 minutes” position by the time we’re at 15:30. You could watch “Thursday” stretch and see how close you are to Friday!

Killer work. What a fantastic vision. It reminds me of much of my graphic work back in the late 60’s, early 70’s. And thanks for the screensaver.

Someone should make a real-world version!

This is beautiful work! One quirk on my system - the online version doesn’t match up with my screensaver (OSX 10.4.9), the center three bars are shifted to the right, not in line with the three time-bars. Is this on purpose?

Hey, this looks like a great screensaver. I get the following error when trying to apply it in Sys Preferences (it installs fine):

    “Can’t load screensaver
You cannot use the screen saver PolarClock on this computer. Contact the developer of this software for a newer version.”

I’m on intel Macbook pro with all the most recent updates. Is this an Intel vs. Powermac thing?

    Simplistic yet elegant.

  7. Danno / April 20th, 2007 2:12 am

Very nifty. Do you suppose for the next version you could make text that has gone below the horizontal flip its orientation? I think that’d make the clock much easier to read.

I love it, it’s very nice. It would be great if the support for multiple monitor was better.

The screensaver causes the fan in my macbook to spin up wildly within a minute of running it. Really too bad too because I think it is great otherwise. Anyone else have this problem?

  44. anonymous / April 23rd, 2007 12:16 am

Have you thought about using the CHROMO (http://chromo.org/about.php) colors? They’re supposedly calibrated for therapeutic purposes (and I think they’re nicer looking than the current color scheme).

  45. anonymous / April 23rd, 2007 12:18 am

The screensaver (and the version running in Safari) both use a wild about of CPU resources, causing my MacBook’s fan to spin up to great volumes very quickly as well - is this a problem with the programming or a problem with Flash?

  46. Tom / April 23rd, 2007 12:22 am

Re: The macbook thing, I’m assuming the screensaver loads the flash file and for some reason any type of Flash will cause the MacBook fan to start up, don’t think it’s working too hard, just upsets something.

  47. m4tts1m / April 23rd, 2007 1:29 am

    i like your clock.
it reminds me of system47 http://www.mewho.com/system47/
    but with an actual function.

suggestion for future versions: vary the thickness of each arc to correspond with units (eg: hour=wide, minute=average, second=thin) I think this would improve the reading at-a-glance or from a distance.

    thanks again

  48. anonymous / April 23rd, 2007 2:32 am

Re again the MacBook think - it’s not just that Flash causes the fan to start up, but that the computer slows down, etc. and gets quite warm: the animation does use a huge amount of CPU resources, and I’m wondering if it’s the programming or Flash in general.

GORGEOUS screen saver. Thank you for making it available!

I WOULD second Michael above and suggest that the PB logo fade away after a few seconds… It would add to the elegance of the work.

As for those seeking more motion, I suppose 10ths and 100ths of seconds could be added (see Build’s clock saver: www.designbybuild.com/grid-based-clock-screensaver/)… but I could see how that could negatively affect the frame rate!

    Great work, PB!

HI, your Polar Clock is excellent. Now is my default screensaver.
A suggestion: if it is a screensaver, it’s purpose is to save energy and the health of your screen. So, for the colors of the indicators, you can use the Emergy-C Low Wattage Palette. You can read more at http://ecoiron.blogspot.com/2007/01/emergy-c-low-wattage-palette.html

Really nice and much appreciated. :)
The form is great, but the function needs some tweaking.
As mentioned, it requires more motion of all the elements to fill its purpose as a screen saver. Really the easiest solution is just to have the monitor shut down after 20mins or so. Or whole arrangement could just move around every few minutes to avoid a static position.
Second would be (also mentioned) to flip the orientation of the text as it moves around, say every 90 degrees on the larger wheels, less so on the smaller.
Last would be the size of the text itself. It just needs to be larger to be viewed at a glance. The text could also be positioned at the end of the bar as it moves around, in the same color, so it stands out on the black

The high CPU usage is definitely a deal-breaker for me. I don’t need my MacBook turning into a superheated jet turbine every time I leave it idle.

  83. pixelbreaker / April 28th, 2007 3:20 pm

Kevin, I can’t achieve the effect of this screensaver without doing a lot of maths, that’s the nature of drawing segmented circular bars with rounded corners.

  84. Andrew / April 28th, 2007 9:27 pm

Polar Clock on a color LCD screen wrist watch with minimalist black strap…simple….

  85. Kevin Yank / April 29th, 2007 8:44 am

pixelbreaker, I appreciate the geometry-intensive nature of this screensaver, but there must be a way to do it more efficiently. If you’re recalculating the entire display on each frame, for example, it would be easy to optimize by only recalculating those bars whose values have changed since the last frame (or are in the midst of animating).

  98. Opaquit / May 5th, 2007 11:10 am

VitaminT: The screensaver scale options can be changed by editing its C1 file. This is an unofficial way to do that and it’s not supported, of course.
Anyway, go to your Windows folder and open ‘PolarClock v2.c1′ file with Notepad. Then change the line saying ‘ExactFit’ into ‘noscale’ or ‘ShowAll’. ‘noscale’ will make the screensaver look like 100% Scale in Flash Player.

  106. Jose / May 8th, 2007 9:55 am

    It’s a very amazing clock.

Only a simple issue about it:

The day-timelines go from inner to outer, in time resolution terms, but the hour-timelines go from outer to inner. It’s a bit confused to read the time of a look.

    Hi.
Love the clock - works beautifully.

I’m currently putting together a flash clock myself and was wondering if I could ask for a tiny bit of advice.

I was using setInterval as a means of keeping time in seconds, but it seems this method fails as it is not an accurate counting system.

Do you have a recommended work round?
    Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

  134. futurefabric / May 25th, 2007 6:10 pm

    Hey - great screensaver.
I’m currently trying to create a flash clock screensaver myself based round the concept of pantone swatch palettes.

Can you give me some advice? – setInterval doesn’t seem to work accurately enough for use with a clock – what method do you use to count seconds?

    Cheers.

    Hello,

You mentioned you used the capStyle argument for rounding the corners of the paths. capStyle has 3 arguments - none, square and round. But round gives you the pill style caps, and the others are square. So am I right in assuming these are not single strokes but composed of 4 lines - inner/outer arcs + 2 flat ends? In which case you don’t need to set the capStyle, just alter line width to the amount of rounding required?

    Cheers

It is cool but it would look better if the faster bars were on the outside.
    so the bars would be…
    Secounds
    Minutes
    Hours
    Days
    Month
    Day of week

But thats just my suggestion… and I would love to be e-mailed if it is changed.

  142. muncheese / June 4th, 2007 5:46 am

You should combine the day and the month bar into one, and label the month bar as year bar. Also label the hours into 24 hr format, or redo it for 12 hour cycle instead of a 24 hr cycle with 12 hour labels.

    Very nice work,
    only a few issues-

1.the date part (D M Y) is off center to the time part,
may it has to do with resolution (1440X900, MBP),

2.personally, i would like to have the text straight,
it is much easier to read.

perhaps consider the option of integrating it with iCal
and have it countdown to a set date. i have built a thing like this (a machine, in The Real-World)

Another idea for the clock: how about stretching all the rings depending on how close they are to the next mark?
Another idea, when seconds arrive to "60", instead of making it disappear and start from zero, why not have the whole ring disappear from right to left (clockwise) in about a half of second to then show "one second". I'm not I'm clear... =/

Thx Jan Kolarik for the hint with the scaling mode on windows xp. Unfortunately it didn't work. The funny thing is that after I'd set up my PB from scratch the polar-clock is showing exactly the same problems under osx too. The month, date n day circles are not centered and are more aligned to the right side then the other circles.

Anyway, it's still a great work / keep it up

  173. JulianG / June 28th, 2007 9:38 pm

    Beautiful work!

I'd love to have this as a screen saver. But I think the main purpose of a screen saver is to avoid displaying the same things on the same areas of the screen for long periods of time. So I think in order to be a good screen saver the Polar Clock should have some sort of random positioning thing. Otherwise, most of the curves will remain in the same place for a lot of time.

    Another thing:
I'd love to see a "floating point" version of this.
That'd be that each curved bar does not represent an integer, but a float. So if it's 17:30:00, then the hour bar would say "5pm" but it's size/angle would be that of 5.5.
The same with the day. It might say "Thursday" but it could be in constant motion depending on the hours, the minutes, etc.

I'm an ActionScript programmer, are you planing to release the source code? How can I help?

    cheers!
    JulianG

  175. [...] You leave your desk for a few minutes, lets just say, the mom/girlfriend/wife or whoever it may be is summoning you from across the house. Well, when you return to your desk, what do you see? A picture slideshow, flurry, something random, anyways, here are a few of the screensavers I have come to love and use…Save Hollywood - Save Hollywood is great because you can set Any Quicktime movie as your screensaver, this is a great way to get, as an example, the screensavers used in the Apple store to display as your screensaver. I have, since I first heard of Save Hollywood, used the iPod Nano movie with the colored dancers. Looks great, very enjoyable. Polar Clock - Polar Clock by PixelGroup is a very unique way of checking the day, week, month, year, and time. All of the measures that constitute our concept of time are displayed in a circle wheel filled with vibrant colors and constant change. Polar Clock does not necessarily make it easy to tell the time but it certainly makes it look good. LotsaWater - LotsaWater makes it appear as though your monitor is being pelted by rain. You can increase, decrease, intensify, or lessen the amount and strength of the drops. This way you can have a splash that hits every few seconds but ripples throughout the screen for several moments or you can have consecutive small drops hitting at every moment. Although it may cause dizziness you can also make enormous drops hit every instant causing your screen to constantly be rippling vigorously. Those are some of the screensavers I find myself enjoying and I hope you enjoy them as well. Why was my question about why the clock was not working deleted? I've been hoping someone would have an answer as to how I could get it to stop locking up my system but I come back and the question is deleted.

I think this breaks a lot of stuff on Mac OSX. My CMD+Tab, expose, dashboard, spotlight etc. all stopped working. Something to do with keyboard input.

Otherwise I love the screensaver, so hopefully these bugs can be fixed!

It's an issue with Screentime for Flash, the software I use to wrap flash/flex apps up as screensavers. If another screensaver on your system uses screentime, and a previous version of screentime, it screws things up completely. very frustrating, i'm waiting for a fix from the guys over at screentime media.
