PolarClock Dashboard Widget

widget.jpg

A lot of people had been asking for this as a widget. So i’ve put together this version for the OS X Dashboard. The options are limited to language selection only.

I had no idea how widgets were built until this morning, and to my pleasant surprise, they are basically Safari (WebKit) running on a transparent background. A good place to start is on the apple site.

The PolarClock widget is basically a blend on HTML, JavaScript and Flash, embedded using SWFObject. The one major issue was that I couldn’t get Flash movies to display in my widget. All you have to do is add an extra flag in the info.plist file named “AllowInternetPlugins” and set it to true.

    Polar Clock:

in German, it should be “Uhr” instead of “Stunden”

Hey man, really nice clock and widget but I have a request that seems that it might be doable – is there any chance of getting a transparent background version of this clock?

  6. gabriel / July 31st, 2007 21:11

I tried that, but there are issues with WebKit (safari, which widgets are rendered through), it doesn’t support transparent SWFs, so I was forced to do a solid background, or nothing at all. If this issue is fixed in the WebKit that ships with Leopard later this year, I will change it for that.

Safari 3 / new WebKit supports transparent backgrounds – have seen it with my own eyes, but not tried it on a widget. Have you tried it with the Safari 3 beta version?

si, i have safari 3, but I think OS X uses a v2 webkit for widgets, until leopard is released that is…

i love this clock, but there is one thing that bothers me.. wouldn’t it be even more gorgeous if, when the circle is completed, the “tail” went clockwise (instead of bouncing backwards) so that the front could continue it’s beutiful flow?

    do I make sense? :)

  12. kadabra / August 21st, 2007 06:15

Have you tried a circle shaped background instead of the square? I think it would look nicer if the borders were thinner or the background were just as large as the outer circle

    Gorgeous.

    I love this. Love it.

Thanx for such a cool thing! It is just beautiful.
I installed it as screensaver on vista. But I would be so happy to have it as a gadget, do you think it will come like this one day?

Hope a Vista version of this awesome widget ;)

to cross comment from another post. if you having problems with command functions dying after the screen saver running and you have a dual monitor setup, set the screen saver to “main screen” only and it’ll fix the problem.

a quick fix before an update comes out.

    Hi,

first off all: nice looking screensaver.

I have tested the latest build on 2 intel macs both running 10.5.4.

Basicly the screensaver works but causes some ugly side-effect.

    Description:
If the screensaver is triggered once and you start again working on your Mac with 10.5.4 the following process is marked as not longer running/responding in Activity Monitor:
    ScreenSaverengine

    Lets continue:
As result the usual mac-shortcuts like CMD+ALt+4 for screenshots is not longer working until i kill the process above.

As it happens on both macs i had for testing issues, it looks a bit like a bug.

If i can provide you additional informations, feel free to contact me.

    best regards
    fidel

Yesterday i downloaded and installed the screensaver, Mac version (i have a macbook bought in Jan.)… is very very neat, i like it a lot… but it crashes constantly when i try to return to the screen. There’s some knonw issues? Something i can do or you’d have to patch it?

I often wonder if Gabriel has ever noticed the irony in a screensaver that people often have burn into their screen. Has anyone else?

    Hello!

I just wanted to say that I have been having a similar problem as Invince_Z (October 4th, 2008 11:26 am), and would like to know if there is any way to fix this.
I really like this Clock, but have no way of keeping it when my Screen Saver Properties has been Closed…

    Vista 64, SP1

There is a fix for 64bit Vista. Run the installer, but don’t close out of the screen saver screen just yet. Open Explorer and in your search bar at the top type polarclock and search your C:\Windows folder. If it doesn’t come up you may need to hit Advanced Search and check the box for hidden/system files. The file for me was called PolarClock3.scr and located at C:\Windows\SysWOW64. Copy that file to the C:\Windows\System32 directory and you are good to go.
